Campus Scene Newsletter for Faculty & Staff - January/February 2004

New Print Shop Opens to Accolades
as Facilities Progress Marches On

After more than a year of planning and anticipation, Roz Scott and the crew in the Grossmont College Printing Department are enjoying their brand new space in the west side of the remodeled LRC and evolving Technology Center. They moved into their new quarters in December, just before finals. According to Scott, “We survived the perils of demolition of the old LRC.”

Faculty and staff are enjoying the improved and more client-friendly service counter, too. “Not only were we able to design the flow of work through the room for optimum efficiency, we were able to configure a service counter for friendly and responsive service to our clients,” Scott said. She also pointed out the roomy job pick-up area where faculty members are now able to retrieve their own jobs (except for tests) without having to wait for assistance. Scott says, “We’ve received dozens of compliments on the new area.”

Meanwhile, pencils are flying as fast as hammers as new construction around the Grossmont College campus bulldozes its way into the new year.

In January, selection committees sat for presentations by architectural candidates to design and build a new Student Services Center and a multi-story parking structure.

The parking demand is a no-duh question and work is already under way in Parking Lot 5 to obtain necessary geological information. Testing engineers completed the geological work during the holiday break and the Select Committee has recommended an architect for the project. That firm will be recommended to the Board at its next meeting.

The new Student Services Center will consolidate Student Services programs and staff into one multi-story “gateway” center providing coordinated services to Grossmont students. It will also house the Public Safety office and flexible spaces for instruction and community meetings.

At the same time, the Student Center will be expanded for more dining area and multiple vendors as well as improved work areas for the Associated Students and Culinary Arts. At present, the gateway task force is determining square footage needs and office proximity needs and is waiting for completion of the architect selection process. Again, an architect has been selected for recommendation to the Governing Board.

Meanwhile the new Tech Center (the old LRC) noses nearer construction above the Main Quad. The present target date for completion is April 16, the week after spring break. The first tenants will begin their moves into the building that week.

Other projects in the works include expansion and remodeling of Room 220, a new Science Lab Building, a Digital Arts and Sculpture Building, a Health Professions/Sciences building, and reconfigured entrances to the campus both from Highway 125 and Highwood Road off Lake Murray Blvd.
