Application Process
The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community
College District and Grossmont College do not discriminate on the

Application Procedure
The
Respiratory Therapy Program at Grossmont College accepts a limited
number of students each year as dictated by staffing, laboratory and
instrumentation availability, and the number of clinical sites
available for student assignment .

To apply for
admission to the Respiratory Therapy Program, the following
steps must be taken:
1.
Complete the following
prerequisite courses with a “C” grade or higher prior to program
admission.
Biology 144
Anatomy & Physiology
8 units
& 145
I & II (or equivalent)
Chemistry 115
Fundamentals of
4 units
or Chemistry equivalent, or
One year High School Chemistry
2.
Schedule an
appointment with a counselor or Program Coordinator to discuss
program or general education requirements.
Call 619-644-7448 for an orientation to the RT program
which includes information on prerequisites, structure of the
program and employment opportunities.
3.
Obtain and
complete an application from the Respiratory Therapy website
www.grossmont.edu/healthprofessions/rtProgram/default.asp.
Email or mail the completed application to
Carolina.Cruz@gcccd.edu.
Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve
basis with all prerequisites completed.
4.
Submit two
official college transcripts for all college credit earned.
Send one official college transcript directly to the
Respiratory Therapy Program, 8800 Grossmont College Drive, El
Cajon, CA 92020.
Send the other copy to the Admissions and Records Office at
Grossmont College.
5.
Complete all
admission requirements to Grossmont College.
6.
All entering
Respiratory Therapy students must pass the Test of Essential
Academic Skills test (TEAS).
This is a diagnostic test that covers basic Math,
Reading, and Science.

7.
Students admitted to the program must submit a satisfactory
physical and dental examination report, record of current
immunizations, current CPR card and evidence of malpractice
insurance. Background check and drug testing is required
prior to clinical placement.
8.
Any prior
convictions of a misdemeanor or felony may influence eligibility
for state licensure.
Applicants are urged to contact the Respiratory Care Board of
California. Contact

Applications are accepted year around.
Upon receipt of
application materials and verification of prerequisites,
students will become eligible candidates on a first-come,
first-serve basis upon completed of the application.
An individual orientation counseling
session
with the program director or designee
is strongly recommended.
It is
the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all transcripts
have been received by the Respiratory Therapy Program office and
that all information on the application is correct and kept up to
date.
Student
selection will be based on completion of the prerequisite courses
and date of completed application. Students admitted to the program must
submit a satisfactory physical and dental examination report, record
of current immunizations and TB test, and a current CPR card.
Student malpractice insurance will need to be purchased for a
nominal fee before entering the program.
A background check and drug screen is required prior to entering the
program. This information is available from the RT program
secretary and the RT website.
To
enroll in the Associate Degree Program:

Complete a Grossmont College admissions online application for Grossmont College
at www.grossmont.edu
Apply Online.

Submit
two official transcripts of any previous high school and/or
college credit. Send one copy directly to the Respiratory
Therapy Office. Send the other copy to the Admissions and
Records Office of Grossmont College.
Transfer, Challenge and Advanced Placement Policy
An
individual evaluation will be conducted for students wishing to
transfer into the Program from other schools, or to challenge the
Core Curriculum for advanced placement into the
RT CoARC and WASC accredited second year of the Program.
Placement will be based on a space available basis, with students
who are fully matriculated in the Program having first priority.
Schedule an appointment with the Respiratory Therapy Program
Coordinator to discuss advanced placement.
Upon
Acceptance
When
notified of acceptance into the Respiratory Therapy Program each
student is required to:
Complete
all admission requirements to attend Grossmont College. Refer to the
Grossmont College Catalog for details or check with the Admissions
and Records Office. Submit evidence of a satisfactory medical and
dental examination. Forms are provided by the Respiratory Therapy
Office and will be available on the website to entering students. Completed forms must be returned to the RT office
by the last working day of August. Prior to entering clinical
training, the student must have a current CPR card, clinical attire,
malpractice insurance coverage, and background
check with drug testing completed. CPR training is available
from the San Diego Chapter of the American
Heart Association, hospitals, clinics throughout the San
Diego area. Insurance application forms and
information of the background check and drug screen are
supplied by the RT office. The cost of insurance is approximately $20.00
per year and the
background check/drug screen is approximately $70.00.
Student
Assistance
To enhance
the quality of instructional programs and assist students in
achieving their academic goals, Student Services, in addition to its
Admissions, Financial Aid, and Counseling departments, provides the
following services: Assessment, Bookstore, Career Planning, Disabled
Students Services, EOPS, Health Services, Re-Entry Center, Tutoring
and Student Affairs (Associated Students of Grossmont College). All
new students are encouraged to attend one of the New Student
Advising Sessions. For more information contact the Grossmont
College Counseling Center.
Program
Cost
A parking fee will be charged to all
students using the parking facilities. A Student Benefit Card is
optional. Students will be required to furnished clinical attire for
fieldwork assignments. The cost of the program including textbooks,
supplies, etc., will be approximately $3000.00 to $3500.00 for 2
years (resident student).
